Brigadier General Charles Young (1864–1922) was a trailblazing African American Army officer, educator, and diplomat. Born into slavery, he became the third Black graduate of West Point and served with distinction in the famed Buffalo Soldier regiments. Young held key roles as a military attaché, national park superintendent, and professor of military science, and was the highest-ranking Black officer in the U.S. Army during his lifetime. Though denied promotion due to racism, he was posthumously elevated to Brigadier General in 2022. His life remains a powerful symbol of service, perseverance, and leadership.
